Orioles Recognize 2008 Negro Leagues Draft Pick Bert Simmons
Woodlawn's Own Baseball Legend Bert Simmons

The Orioles’ 2008 honorary Negro Leagues draft pick and former Negro Leagues player BERT SIMMONS visited Oriole Park to throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Thursday, June 19. Prior to the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft on June 5, each club selected a former Negro Leagues player as part of the Special Negro Leagues Draft. The Orioles selected Simmons, a long-time Baltimore resident, who played for the Baltimore Elite Giants in 1950 as a pitcher and outfielder. Simmons is actively involved with the Baltimore-based James Mosher Little League Baseball Association, known as the oldest continuously operating African-American youth baseball league in the country. Simmons attended the game with youth and coaches from the league. Now 84 years old, Simmons was one of 30 former Negro Leagues players to be honored during the draft.

The Woodlawn Villager spoke to Mr. Simmons recently. He shared with us his excitement at the special treatment he received during his trip to Florida for the draft pick. He was picked up by a limousine, delivered to the the airport and when he arrived in Florida, he was surprised to be met with another limousine ride to the ceremony. Bert said the entire experience was a highlight of his life. Congratuations to our own living legend and “Woodlawn Wonder”, Bert Simmons.
